Shooting From Behind Cover

shooting from concealmentWhen behind cover it is a very natural urge to get as close to it as possible and even snug up right against it. It feels safer, but is it? No!

If you are all the way up against cover and you need to lean out to shoot, you will not have your weapon at the ready. This means that as you pop out, you will have to present your weapon. This extra step takes more time and results in a much slower target acquisition. Now what happens if you have to get behind cover again quick if you are taking incoming rounds? If your arms have extended forward of your cover and you try to duck back behind cover your arms will get hung up on the edge of cover (wall for example). In order to get back behind cover you need to retract your arms, which again, takes extra time. Worse yet, you forget to retract your arms and you get hung up on the edge of your cover!

The other risk for getting too close to your cover is weapon retention. If you are up against your cover, pop out and extend beyond your cover, your weapon and arms have a blind spot. What if someone has snuck up and is on the opposite side of your cover? They can very easily grab your hand, arms, or even worse your gun! You would have never even seen it coming.

The Lesson?

When shooting from cover always stand far enough behind it where you can have your weapon fully presented before you come out, making sure to keep your entire body and gun behind cover. This is for two reasons:

1. Faster to present from cover and retreat back to cover resulting in faster target acquisition since the weapon is fully presented with no obstructions to maneuver around.

2. Weapon retention!
