Selecting Weapon Lights and Tactical Lights for Home Defense

tactical lightYou’re dead asleep and you hear the sound of glass shattering.

An intruder is making his way to your bedroom and the lights are off. If you turn your light on, you not only gave away your position, but you allow the intruder to have very clear vision! The solution? Keep a tactical light or weapon mounted light for home defense purposes and practice with them to maintain your tactical advantage.

Why use a tactical light for home defense?

1. You are familiar with the layout of your house so navigating in the dark is easier for you than an intruder.
2. Maintain the element of surprise by keeping the light off.
3. Tactical lights, when shined into an intruder’s eyes are blinding. They will see spots and their “night vision” will be gone.

Weapon mounted light or handheld tactical light?

1. PRO: Weapon mounted allows the use of both hands for a two handed firing grip, using one hand to call 911, open doors, clear malfunctions, reload, and so forth.
2. CON: Weapon mounted lights means that anything you shine a light on, you point a gun at. Wouldn’t want to illuminate your teenage son or daughter who snuck in late.
3. PRO: Handheld tactical lights are easy to carry daily (and quite handy too!). Uniformity in practice can be a good thing! If you have to grab a different gun in the house, you can still use a separate light. They can also be used independently of the gun to avoid pointing a gun at anything you illuminate.
4. CON: They do not allow as strong of two handed firing grip. Reloads, cell phone use, and other tasks that require two hands are more difficult.

Enjoy your light shopping and buy what’s best for you! Be sure to identify its purpose and practice with whatever you choose. You do not need to break the bank for a quality light. Remember; do not go overboard on light intensity (lumens) for indoor use as reflecting light off of walls can temporarily blind YOU!
