Is the 1911 the Perfect Carry Gun?

1911-carry-gunThe 1911 has been around a very long time. Many people have shied away from them for a few reasons. They are expensive, their ammunition is expensive, they have a manual safety that takes lots of training to become muscle memory, and some of them have reliability issues.

What about the good? They are SLIM! They are very, very, very accurate. Most people shoot them better than any other platform. They look classy, and sharp. They are iconic to American history. They are chambered (most often) in the legendary .45ACP. Did I mention that they are the most fun to shoot?

So this is all fun and games on the range, but how about on my hip? The 191 1 platform still has, and always will have its die- hard fan base. The guns are slim through the slide, frame, and grip. This makes them extremely easy to hide either inside the waistband (IWB) or outside the waistband (OWB). Their slim magazines also make it easy to carry a spare (or two!).

If you can pick up a reliable 1911 and practice with it frequently, it may well still hold its place as one of the best carry guns of all times. After all, the modern single-stack striker fired guns like the S&W Shield have near the same capacity, so why not carry the same amount in .45ACP in a more accurate platform?

Here are a few tips to consider when choosing to carry a 1911:
1. Select the 1911 you want to carry and test it for reliability with about 500 rounds. Make sure to test your preferred carry ammo too!
2. Train frequently drawing from a holster. Make sure you practice dis-engaging the safety on the draw. Be sure to put the safety back on before you holster.
3. Make sure your holster doesn’t interfere with the safety or accidentally dis-engage while carrying.
