How Important is Practicing your Draw?

The draw, also known as weapon presentation, could be the most important aspect of defensive gun use.

pistol draw from holsterHow often do you practice? When you are at the range do you shoot from a rest? Is your gun already out on the table? Do you do dry draw/weapon presentation drills at home?

The draw sets the tone of your performance.

It really is quite simple. The draw sets the tone of your performance. Ever had a poor grip on the gun as you came out of the holster? Your shooting was sub-par wasn’t it? Remember the time you had a perfect firing grip and rapid presentation? Your shooting performance was likely reflective of your best.

Two simple tips to improve your draw/weapon presentation, guaranteed:

1. Move your firing hand as rapidly as you can to your holstered weapon. This action should be aggressively fast!
2. Make sure your strong firing grip is obtained by getting your hand high in the tang and pressing the gun down into the holster before presenting. This action is counter intuitive but it ensures a firm firing grip.

Notice how we never even spoke about having the gun leave the holster? That’s because how you initiate the draw sets the tone for the rest of your performance. Practicing being aggressively fast with your initial move and getting that strong firing grip will naturally result in faster and more consistent presentations. Don’t believe me? Try it just 15-20 times dry before your live fire session and see. Enjoy watching yourself shave time off your draw. Something so simple could provide the fraction of a second to save your life.
