“Do unto others as they would do unto you – but do it first.”

Take a moment to watch this video of an armed robbery and notice how the adversaries used the elements of speed, aggression, surprise, and violence to initiate the attack:

Criminals most often use these tactics to catch the victim off guard or gain a competitive edge in an encounter. Often times their level of force becomes so overwhelming that the victim has no ability or desire to fight back.

So the quote goes, “Do unto others as they would do unto you – but do it first.” How do we do this? We train, train, train, and then train some more. Simple training is not right. As they teach at Front Sight, only train if you’re going to train perfectly.

We must not only train our bodies; we must train our minds to respond quickly and aggressively with the element of surprise to violent encounters. We must not meet, but beat the adversary’s actions. This means our training must:

1. Always be fast out of the holster. Rapid presentation whether engaging quickly or taking our time for a precision shot. Build muscle memory being fast out of that holster!
2. Practice voice commands so they are natural to use if the situation calls for it. Practice, “Drop the weapon!” or “Stop or I’ll shoot!” or more simply, “STOP!” – all with a loud and aggressive voice.
3. Practice moving while shooting. Especially while creating space.

With this training we have the potential of gaining the competitive edge, of being the most dedicated opponent, and maybe even being so overwhelming with force that shots don’t even need to be fired. If an attacker is going to try the tactics of speed, aggression, violence, and surprise, do it first.
