Defensive Gun Use Scenario – In Response to our Facebook Page

What Should You Do?We regularly post “scenarios” on our Facebook page to spark intelligent, thought-provoking situational responses. On April 8, 2014 we posted the following:

“SCENARIO: You see a guy approaching the driver’s side of your vehicle while stopped behind two vehicles at a stop sign on a side street at night. He walks up to your driver’s door and aggressively tries to open it. You present your weapon and DO NOT fire. He runs away at the sight of the gun. What do you do next?”

The result here was a defensive gun use that did not result in firing the weapon. In fact, most defensive gun uses do not require discharging the weapon. This is our best case scenario. The threat is eliminated and no one gets hurt.

A response on our Facebook page was: “If you pull out your weapon, you have already made up your mind to fire it. I would have warned them first.” We would have to both agree and disagree. If you are in a position to present your weapon, you best be prepared to use it. However, certain situations arise where the presentation of the weapon will eliminate the threat before the conscious and intentional decision to pull the trigger.

Verbal commands can be very effective and should be used if the situation warrants for two reasons. First is to give the threat an opportunity to stop before using deadly force. Secondly is to create witnesses with in ear shot in the event deadly force is used.

The most common response on our Facebook page was to immediately call the police. This is the most important take-away from this scenario. At Concealed Carry Almanac we promote the legal, safe, and ethical use of firearms for defensive purposes. In this scenario it would be very important to report the incident to the police immediately.

If the potential attacker would make the call first, he could flip the story and attempt to press charges against you. In the even the attacker decided to repeat his intentional act, the police would be one step ahead in apprehending the individual.
