Concealed Carry While Traveling

concealed carry while travelingNot being armed brings a naked feeling (in a bad way). When I’m on the road I want to stay armed if at all possible. But what happens if you’re traveling overnight in hotels, flying, or traveling out of state?

First and foremost: know the law. If you’re traveling out of state you must first find out if you have legal reciprocity to carry in that state as well as the laws surrounding concealed carry. Where can you and cant you carry? What defines the lethal use of deadly force? Visit our Reciprocity and Legislation page to find out.

Let’s talk about flying. People panic about flying with guns. It really is quite easy (assuming the states you’re flying into or out of allow handguns and have no restrictions on capacity etc). All you have to do is have a hard sided lockable case. Make sure your gun is unloaded and alone in the case and locked. When checking your bag simply tell the airline representative, “I have to declare a firearm.” They will usually provide you with a simple form to fill out, check to make sure the gun is unloaded, and then run it through the bag scanner prior to departing. Simply pick up your gun at your destination at the baggage claim service counter of your airline. You can even fly your carry ammo (in original box and within a certain quantity). Check the FAQ page of the airline you will be flying for these and any other unique restrictions.

Once you reach your destination, flying or otherwise, you must consider weapon storage. Although most of us will stay armed throughout the day we must consider storage during our sleeping hours. If staying with a friend or family, make sure your weapon is in a safe and secured place while you sleep out of reach of children or other unauthorized persons.

If you’re in a hotel room simply lock the doors. NEVER leave your weapon in your room when you’re not there. All of the hotel staff can get in. This could be troublesome if your weapon goes missing during a regular room cleaning! If the hotel has a safe, that could be an option. I much prefer keeping it on me until bed time.

As long as you study up on carry laws where you’re traveling and maintain proper storage of your firearm you are good to go. Stay safe and carry on!
