Beware of Crimes of Opportunity

stranger at front doorGood people are being targeted in what is known as “crimes of opportunity.” Let’s use this real life example of a robbery that occurred within the last couple months. An elderly couple had just finished shopping and was walking back to their car carrying their goods. A fine young gentleman was courteous enough to offer a helping hand. After he helped the elderly couple all the way to their car, he robbed them.

It is unfortunate times that we must be careful and observant even when people are being nice and “humanly” to one another. Other examples of crimes of opportunity would be transient solicitors impersonating humanitarian organizations or crooks dressed like utility service men to gain entrance into a home or simply scope the house for a future burglary.

It is very important that simply knowing about these crimes of opportunity does not make us paranoid or spiteful of humanity. There are still good people out there, believe it or not. Here is another short example of how to simply be cautious while still being human.

It was Saturday morning and the doorbell rang. A gentleman with a clipboard and reflective vest was at the door and stated he was there to inspect my gas meter for a leak. Unfortunately mine was in the garage and quickly asked for me to open my garage and started walking towards it. Without hesitation I agreed. He walked around the outside of the house to the garage as I opened it from the inside. Before I let him in, I simply asked to see some identification from the utility company before letting him enter the garage. He kindly obliged and understood. If this guy was a phony, chances are this response would catch him off guard, or he wouldn’t even have an ID.

The moral of the story is this: be mindful and aware of crimes of opportunity, but don’t let it turn you into a grumpy, paranoid, gun-totin’ nut. Stay safe, stay armed, stay aware.
